Jason's Deli Embraces Renewable Energy; Launches 'Solar Deli' in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Demonstrating its commitment to going green, Jasons Deli unveiled its solar deli today at its South IH-35 store in Austin. The south Austin location is the second of Jasons 170 deli restaurants to be powered in part by solar energy, with more systems planned in the near future. NewPoint Energy Solutions, a renewable energy company with Austin operations and a division of Standard Renewable Energy LP, designed and installed the 5.6 kilowatt solar electric system.

At Jasons Deli, we believe we are responsible for being good stewards of the environment, which is why we are investing in clean, renewable energy, said Joe Tortorice Jr., CEO and founder of Jasons Deli. In addition to being the right thing to do for the communities in which we operate, including solar electric power in our energy mix will help to reduce our energy costs over time, which is good for both our business and for our customers. We hope to see other businesses in the area follow our lead and adopt renewable energy.

Jasons 5.6 kilowatt solar array from NewPoint Energy Solutions will generate approximately 7500 kilowatts of power per year for the Austin location. This equates to the annual equivalent of preventing 14,200 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the earths atmosphere, or eliminating a days worth of carbon dioxide emissions from 435 cars. The system includes an in-store monitoring system where customers can see the amount of electricity being produced by the solar panels.

Austin offers one of the most aggressive rebates in the country for solar energy system installations, with Austin Energy offering an incentive rebate of $4.50 per watt. This, combined with the federal tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of a commercial solar array, greatly offsets the cost for progressive businesses like Jasons Deli wanting to adopt renewable energy.

Jasons Deli has always been a leader in healthy living, being one of the first restaurant chains to eliminate artificial trans fat from their menu, said John Berger, CEO of Standard Renewable Energys NewPoint Energy Solutions division. Now, Jasons Deli is establishing its leadership position in promoting a healthy environment by being one of the first to generate clean solar electricity to be used in its stores. The company has several other green initiatives as well, including the planting of thousands of trees at the South Texas Wildlife Refuge as a sponsor of American Forests Global ReLeaf program.

Jasons Delis first solar installation was completed this month in its Dowlen Road store in Beaumont. The solar array at the Dowlen deli is expected to generate approximately 6,900 kilowatts of power per year.
