COMPTON, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Just two weeks after opening a store on Hollywood's iconic Walk of Fame, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market today unveiled its latest store in Compton. His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Duke of York and U.K.'s Special Representative for Trade & Investment, joined L.A. County Supervisor Yvonne Burke, Compton Mayor Eric Perrodin and Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason at the opening.
The new grocery market will bring local jobs and fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices to the neighborhood. Fresh & Easy currently has 43 grocery markets open throughout Southern California and in Nevada and Arizona. The company is a subsidiary of U.K.-based Tesco, one of the world's largest international retailers, which has invested $2 billion over five years in Fresh & Easy.
HRH Prince Andrew said, "I'm delighted to be able to support Tesco as they expand here in the U.S. By locating stores in areas like Compton, Tesco's Fresh & Easy will help contribute to local job creation in neighborhoods that badly need it."
During the store's opening ceremony, the Compton Baseball Academy Teams was presented with a donation from Fresh & Easy. The organization was nominated by local Compton residents and selected by the Fresh & Easy store staff.
"Fresh & Easy is committed to opening stores in all types of neighborhoods. We believe everyone deserves fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices, regardless of where they live," said CEO Tim Mason. "We are proud to bring a modern grocery market offering competitive new jobs with comprehensive benefits to Compton."
The Compton Fresh & Easy store employs 22 people. All entry-level positions pay well over the minimum wage, starting at $10 an hour, with a quarterly bonus of up to 10%. Additionally, all employees work a minimum of 20 hours a week and are eligible for comprehensive and affordable healthcare.
Fresh & Easy's private brand has no artificial colors or flavors, no added trans fats, and only uses preservatives when absolutely necessary. The company also offers a range of national brands and authentic products. All food is delivered daily and date-coded so customers know it is fresh.
