Having witnessed the grandeur of buffet restaurants and extravagance of fine dine-in establishments, now ARN indulges in the common story of a typical takeout restaurant, Gold Bowl Chinese Restaurant.
Actually, it is far from ordinary.
Tucked away on the outskirts of Leominster which is located west of Boston, Gold Bowl Chinese Restaurant has been recognized as one of the top 100 Chinese restaurants in the USA in the category of “Top 100 Take-outs” in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, it received the same distinction, being named as one of the “Top 100 Overall Excellence” and “Top 100 Best Value” winners.
What is so interesting about this award-winning restaurant? “Nothing special. I just do my own job to provide the customers with some tasty offerings,” owner Zhong Chen says with a low tone.
Gold Bowl offers Americanized Chinese cuisine. The reason is self evident, that is, to cater to American dining palates. Americans seem to have a fondness for some sweet and sour creations, thus most restaurant owners have already sensed it and adjusted their recipes. The result is a collection of classic Chinese dishes seasoned with American flavors.
General Tso’s Chicken, Sesame Chicken and Orange Beef are among the most highly acclaimed creations. Not surprisingly, these are the best sellers, because they are a delectable combination of vivid color and vibrant texture. On top of that they suit the needs of customers who crave something spicy or sweet.
“We are always trying our best to meet the customers’ requirements,” says Mr. Chen. This simple explanation implies that Mr. Chen sincerely cares for his customers and is dedicated to details.
Throughout seven years of operation, Mr. Chen has learned that the dining preference of customers differs because of age. Usually, young people crave something with a stronger taste, and they are willing and eager to experiment with new and exciting taste, including Szechuan style foods which sometimes numb the tongue. For the old, they are more aware of their health than ever and pay more attention to the fat intake and calorie count of the food they consume. Even with these differences, both young and old will find their favorite on the extensive menu, which covers a variety of food options from different culinary backgrounds.
To respond to the trendy fashion of “healthy dining”, Mr. Chen has added a “Healthy and Diet” section to complement the already versatile menu. The Steamed Vegetable Delight and Steamed Tofu with Vegetable are strongly recommended, as they are cooked without MSG, little oil or salt, and loaded with high nutrient values.
“Fast delivery, no MSG in the food, friendly staff…They offer standard Chinese take-out fare, but also some curry dishes and tofu dishes that you won’t find in every other restaurant.” This review, one sample of the restaurant’s numerous accolades speaks to its word of mouth among the community.
The word of mouth derives from strict quality control. It is a tough job that calls for dedication to detail and great patience. For Mr. Chen, calls upon those qualities when negotiating with suppliers, checking the produce delivered directly to the restaurant, and also keeping an eye on the refrigerator in case of unexpected breakdown. Every step matters.
“We must make sure that all the food we provide are fresh,” said Mr. Chen.
Mr. Chen is no stranger to restaurant operation. Like many owners, he served in numerous culinary roles, and finally took over Gold Bowl Chinese Restaurant in 2003. Through hard work and perseverance he gained experience. Gradually gaining more knowledge of the industry and what it takes to be successful he believes that quality and service are the backbone of a thriving enterprise.
For a takeout eatery, the service is limited to answering the phone, packing the orders and making some suggestions when necessary. If you were to stop in to Gold Bowl, you’d see some staff scrambling around the kitchen preparing orders and others answering the phone with a pleasant tone. You’d also see Mr. Chen’s wife, Mrs. Chen at the restaurant talking with some of the regulars, asking how they feel about the dishes, and receiving feedback from the customers.
In a customer-driven world, any business which values its customers and places their requirements as the first priority will be a success. Restaurant industry giants, Applebee’s, McDonald, and Panda Express claim their success is through their loyalty system and efficient management. However, for most Chinese takeout eateries, management style and the language barrier is a big obstacle which oftentimes hinders them from conveying their management concept and delivering the best service to customers.
Realizing that the management of the restaurant can be improved, Mr. Chen is now in the process of hiring a bi-lingual Chinese and English speaker to ensure that all communications are understood perfectly.
Gold Bowl Chinese Restaurant, this little yet charming restaurant is bound to bring more exciting news to the community in the near future.
