EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SUPERVALU INC. (NYSE:SVU), the third-largest grocery retail company in the United States, announced today that its Acme, Albertsons, bigg’s, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw’s, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy stores have begun making the switch to canola oil, a trans fat-free cooking oil, in their delis. The change to canola oil includes an extra, added benefit: a reduction of saturated fat, which provides customers with better-for-you choices to support their ever-changing lifestyles. The transition is expected to be complete in all participating SUPERVALU banner stores by Labor Day.
“As a leading grocery retailer, SUPERVALU consistently looks for ways to improve our customers’ lives by offering them better-for-you food options,” said Mike Buck, vice president, service deli merchandising. “Not only does this move to a new, zero trans fat cooking oil for our deli prepared foods help us better meet our customers’ needs, the additional reduction of saturated fat allows our customers to enjoy the same great-tasting deli selections in a more healthful way.”
The transition to canola cooking oil complements the company’s “Premium Fresh & Healthy” initiative, a strategy designed to enhance the customers’ shopping experience by emphasizing great-tasting, high-value products that are easy to prepare, easy to find and that delight the customer. The Premium Fresh & Healthy program also focuses on visual merchandising and fresh departments that offer natural and organic products, expanded perishables, international foods or enhanced pharmacy and health and beauty departments to support healthy lifestyles.
“As a grocery retailer, we know that when it comes to food, offering better-for-you options are important, and at SUPERVALU, we’re all for surprising and delighting our customers with food choices that improve and enhance their lives,” Buck said. “We’re committed to consistently reviewing our product offering to provide the best, freshest quality products possible for our customers.”
SUPERVALU banner delis prepare a variety of fried products which vary from store to store and may include items like fried chicken. Select SUPERVALU banner prepared deli selections are now prepared in a zero trans fat canola oil and reduced saturated fat frying oil. Signage informing customers of this change will be displayed at respective SUPERVALU store deli counters.
