Nutrisystem Rings in the New Year with a New Commitment of up to $325,000 to the American Diabetes Association

HORSHAM, Pa.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI), is kicking off the New Year by expanding its support of the American Diabetes Association’s Stop DiabetesSM movement with a new campaign that guarantees a minimum donation to the Association of $250,000 and a maximum donation of $325,000 by making a ten-percent donation for every new 28-Day auto delivery order placed of Nutrisystem D, Nutrisystem’s weight loss program designed to help people with type 2 diabetes lose weight. The campaign will run from now through March 31, 2010.

“The American Diabetes Association is on the front lines of stopping diabetes and its devastating impact on individuals, families and communities every day,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem. “Our continued and growing support will be used to educate thousands of people with diabetes to help manage their disease through weight loss and exercise, and will encourage millions of others to prevent type 2 diabetes by adopting healthier lifestyles and encouraging others to do the same.”

The Stop Diabetes movement, which launched in November 2009 in conjunction with American Diabetes Month, is designed to educate Americans about the devastating, physical and emotional impact of diabetes, elevate the sense of urgency around the disease and inspire people to take action.

“Nutrisystem was the first company to sign on as a sponsor of the Stop Diabetes movement and we are thankful of their continued commitment to the cause,” said Nash Childs, Chair of the Board, American Diabetes Association. “The fight to stop diabetes requires a daily commitment from all of us to eradicate this deadly disease. Nutrisystem’s support will ensure that we have the resources to engage in that fight every day.”

About Nutrisystem D

Clinically-tested Nutrisystem D was introduced by Nutrisystem as a healthy and effective weight loss program designed to help the 24 million Americans with diabetes who may want to lose weight. The program provides over 120 healthy, portion controlled meals, formulated using a low glycemic approach which emphasizes healthy whole grains, as well as low fat and low sodium foods. The Nutrisystem D program is delivered direct to the customer’s door, and includes a Welcome Kit with a meal planner, a resource guide highlighting Nutrisystem tips and tools for weight loss, and an on-the-go meal planner, as well as access to a host of online tools and free membership in Nutrisystem’s robust online community. All Nutrisystem programs come with free 24/7 access to Nutrisystem weight loss counselors. Nutrisystem recommends a combination of diet and exercise to lose weight.

The results from the clinical study conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine and published in the journal Postgraduate Medicine(1), show that a pre-packaged, portion controlled meal plan, such as Nutrisystem, helped overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes lose significantly more weight and reduce their A1C test scores (a 90-day measure of blood sugar control) by almost a full point greater than those following a diabetes support and education program, according to the findings. This weight loss was also associated with significant reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol and waist circumference. The Study was funded through an unrestricted educational grant from Nutrisystem. Not all menu items were included in the Study.
