Jade Garden, located at Balboa Street in San Francisco, is a cozy and popular destination for both locals and those out of town when they are looking to go on a gastronomic journey. It has been just over a year since the current owner, Nelson took over the operation from the previous proprietor. During this period, he has built up a large base of loyal customers, with groups of customers stopping in each day to dine. The beautiful and romantic seaside surroundings add an extra layer of beauty to the Jade Garden dining experience and many patrons see the restaurant as a perfect place to have a meal at after a hard day’s work.

Nelson and his Story
Years of hard work and unremitting effort helped him achieve success in his career. He began his journey in Chinese cuisine as a teenager then immigrated to the USA in the 1980s. The experience he gained working in California allowed him to accumulate managerial know-how and capital. In the meantime, he observed and studied Americanized Chinese cuisine while working as a chef at a top restaurant. Competition in the restaurant industry has become increasingly fierce and with that comes continuous challenges for restaurant owners. Nelson enjoys tackling challenges though and sees them as an opportunity to improve the dining experience whether through adding new signature dishes or enhancing the décor.

Décor and Cozy Ambience
“A restaurant’s popularity doesn’t end with just having an ideal location and fair prices,” Nelson argues. “Instead, cozy ambience is an indispensable element that can contribute to unparalleled service and high customer satisfaction levels.”

The interior of Jade Garden is simply decorated while also being remarkably clean. By no means tiny, the restaurant can seat up to 70 diners in a space imbued with a full spectrum of colors and textures. The tone is best described as being focused on deeper and more calming colors which helps give the whole restaurant a tranquil vibe that is further enhanced by the Chinese calligraphy roll hanging on the wall.

“We want customers to feel at home when they are at Jade Garden,” Nelson concludes.

Nutritious and Healthy Food
A wide selection of services is offered at Jade Garden, ranging from dine-in and take-out to delivery, and even party rooms. Local favorites such as fish fillet over vegetable, crispy chicken, deep fried fish and more can be found at Jade Garden along with some other surprisingly tasty dishes.

Jade Garden features Shunde-style cooking as well as an array of exquisite Cantonese dishes. One of the signature dishes is Home Style Stuffed Dace Fish. The fish is deboned then stir-fried with meat ending up with a thick sauce. Diners will be astonished by the subtle texture, freshness, and appetizing taste of this rare dish. The ingenious chefs cook the dish in a way that maintains the original flavor of the fresh ingredients while also maximizing the overall flavor of the dish.

The ingredients, according to Nelson, are mostly local grown and very fresh—there are four produce deliveries a week. Nelson takes time out of his busy day to help receive shipments so that he can guarantee the freshness of the produce to his customers. He can accept slightly higher costs as long as that means he can guarantee the quality is high enough to fulfill the expectations of those who expect only the best from his restaurant. The menu has been updated in terms of seasonality. During the winter, new items such as hot pot appear on the menu.

Managerial and Operational Consideration
Nelson spoke much about his friends, all the way from the previous proprietor of Jade Garden to the current managerial staff. His two brothers, who came to America over twenty years ago, now work as veteran chefs at the restaurant. Other family members also work together with Nelson, rendering assistance to his expanding business. Nelson extended his heartfelt gratitude to their faithfulness and affectionateness while adhering to the principle of “treating all working staff as equals.” He is a man with great self discipline and because of that the restaurant is run efficiently. Fully trusting that his employees will provide outstanding service, he prefers to spend time working in the kitchen and preparing delectable food for patrons. Every member of the team at Jade Garden feels lucky to be able to work for such an easygoing boss.

Nelson attributed his success to his diligence, perseverance, and honesty. To him, a restaurant manager and his staff need to go out of their way to provide customers with a great dining experience. So it isn’t a surprise that first-rate service and friendly communication invariably come first at Jade Garden. Immersed in Western culture, Nelson and his Jade Garden also maintain the Chinese identity of the restaurant through making sure the menu offers plenty of traditional dishes. This departure from the usual Americanized Chinese fare adds a bit of excitement to each patron’s gastronomic journey.
