Have Fun at Chinn’s

Have Fun at Chinn’s

The Kuangs took over Chinn’s Restaurant in 1984 and have turned it into one of the finest Chinese eateries in Salem. Always conscious of location, they knew from the beginning that the restaurant had potential and could be a heavyweight in the local dining scene if they focused hard on creating a great experience for each customer.

Customers know about Chinn’s Restaurant through its great word of mouth. Offering dine-in and take-out options and over 3,600 square feet of dining space, Chinn’s Restaurant is able to accommodate the local community’s demand for quality Oriental cuisine in a relaxing environment.

Chinn’s Restaurant received the Top 100 Local Favorite award at the 7th Annual Top 100 Chinese Restaurant Awards Ceremony. It was also ranked third in the Best of 2010 Chinese Restaurant in the Northeast Area by local media.

The Main Draw is the Food

Chinn’s kitchen utilizes a variety of cooking methods. Steaming, stir-frying, and deep frying are all used to create the restaurant’s stunning array of dishes. The illustrated menu is well designed and masterfully presents the 100 dishes served at the restaurant to its patrons. Selections include American-style Chinese offerings as well as Cantonese and Szechuan style dishes.

Foodies are looking for healthier selections nowadays which means restaurateurs have to work harder to satisfy customers. Something which is truly unique here is the separate Healthy\Vegetarian Menu. Health-conscious diners, older customers, and vegetarians especially appreciate this menu as they tend to keep a closer eye on their caloric and sodium intake. Hot selling dishes include Steamed Vegetable and Imitation Meat which come with a slew of house-made sauces for the guests to choose from. Mrs. Kuang boasts that all dishes are cooked with vegetable oil and no MSG is present. Therefore, the guests can truly enjoy their meals without having to worry about if they are unhealthy.

Only a skilled chef is able to turn an ordinary dish into an extraordinary creation. Mr. Kuang happens to be one of them. With more than three decades of experience, he has created a bunch of special dishes including Twice Cooked Pork, Almond Fry Chicken, Hawaiian Beef, and more. The house signature dishes include Mongolian Beef, Broccoli Beef, and Sweet & Sour Pork/Chicken. Among a host of tasty dishes, Orange Chicken is a crowd pleaser due to its special seasoning and the unique way in which it is prepared. The chicken is deep-fried until golden brown, and then cooked with homemade orange sauce. Its subtle sweet and sour taste has resulted in this dish receiving rave accolades from most of those who try it. Moreover, new dishes are added to the menu every few months.

Even with all the delicious Asian fare available, some patrons are still in the mood for American food. Those who do try Chinn’s Western selections will be pleased. The owners don’t just offer bland American cuisine; they put their hearts into it by introducing unique spins on Western dishes like steak, fries, and sandwiches.

Anyone looking to get a great value for their dollar should go to Chinn's! The restaurant offers affordable lunch favorites from 11am to 3pm. Priced from $2.50, you can appease your hunger with hearty portions of food. “I can have a delicious meal there for under $10,” wrote one excited online reviewer. So, if you're in the anywhere near Commercial Street, don't hesitate to stop in to Chinn’s and have a great lunch at a low price.

Mr. Kuang chooses his produce and vegetables as if his life depended on it; all of his suppliers must meet his exacting standards in the areas of health and quality. He also shops at United Grocery everyday, making sure to only pick out the freshest produce available.

A Cozy Environment

Chinn’s full bar has a long beer and wine list. If you are stressed out from a full day’s work, settle into their comfortable chairs, spread out with friends, and relax yourself. If that isn’t enough, consider trying your luck at one of the restaurant’s lottery machines.

Dine in a Stylish Décor

The interior of the restaurant was redecorated two years ago. “Changing the furnishings and color scheme can give a restaurant a fresh new look,” Mrs. Kuang says. Traditional hand-painted paper fans adorn the walls. Looking down, patrons will see a dark blue carpet spread across the floor of the dining area. Walking through the dining area, they will notice the artful arrangement of the elegant chairs and the soft, spacious booths, off to the side. If you're in a festive mood but still looking for a bit of privacy, head to the restaurant’s small party room.

Friendly & Considerate

Mrs. Kuang believes that knowing what customers want and then doing your best to satisfy their needs is the essence of the service industry. By doing so, restaurateurs are able to offer a higher standard of service. Treating each customer like a king, Chinn’s staff always try their best to make each customer’s experience a gratifying one.

Other than running their restaurants, the Kuangs are also in the real estate business. They’ve been able to excel at both because of their team of loyal staff who they can always rely on. “Some of them have been with us for almost ten years,” Mrs. Kuang says gratefully. “Everyone at Chinn’s is part of the family. I believe that when you treat others kindly, you are bound to be rewarded with affection and trust in return.”

Chinn’s Restaurant always provides customers with healthy and savory feasts. Despite being affected by the economic downturn, Chinn’s Restaurant has still been able to battle through rough seas and stay ahead of its competition. As for the future, the Kuangs are always looking for ways to improve each customer’s experience. They keep up with the latest dining trends, and are always searching for new culinary inspirations.
