Excellence at Ho Ho
Ho Ho Grand Buffet
“Ho Ho” is pronounced similar to “Hao Hao” (which means excellence in Chinese), and is the embodiment of Mr. Zhang’s dreams of opening a buffet restaurant. “I opened this restaurant to provide excellent food and service to customers,” says Mr. Zhang, who has been in the restaurant business for over a decade.
Before Mr. Zhang changed the restaurant’s format in 2001, Ho Ho was a take-out restaurant run by his father who had opened it in the late 80s. At the turn of the century, buffet restaurants were getting more and more popular. Mr. Zhang foresaw the possibilities of opening his own buffet restaurant, and immediately set out to try his luck. He ended up opening Ho Ho Grand Buffet, which has been a great success.
Located near several residential areas and a school, the restaurant was immediately embraced by the locals who take delight in stopping by periodically to enjoy the offerings, ranging from Hunan, Szechuan cuisine, Italian cuisine, Americanized Chinese cuisine to Japanese sushi. Looking at the appetizing food well-arranged in rows on the buffet bars, it is easy to see why first time patrons often come back. The most popular buffet items are Sesame Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Happy Family, and Honey Chicken. “We always ensure that all the ingredients are fresh by making daily purchases,” says Mr. Zhang. This approach to freshness is one of the secrets behind the popularity of Ho Ho Grand Buffet. Buffet items are also updated periodically to keep diners intrigued. Sushi is one of the new buffet items that have become a favorite of patrons.
With shiny crystal lights and red paper lanterns hanging on the ceiling, you would never guess that the restaurant had never been redecorated since its opening. The chairs and tables still look brand new and the whole decor has an avant-garde flair. With walls painted light pink and the jade green tables and chairs, the 8000-foot dining room, which is divided into two smaller areas and a big area, is cozy, relaxing, and intimate.
A restaurant can never be called “Hao Hao” without having excellent service. The staff here shows their friendliness and politeness by always smiling at everyone and doing their best to make each patron’s dining experience a pleasant one. They treat both first and long time customers like old friends, giving them coupons which they can redeem for a free meal after eating at the restaurant six times in six months.
With the increase of food costs and labor costs, many restaurants have decided to raise the prices. However, Mr. Zhang tries his best not to do that for the sake of all the loyal patrons. He controls costs by employing less full-time staff and instead adding part-time staff during peak hours. He also goes to different markets to compare prices and only chooses the highest quality ingredients possible. “Quality always comes first” is one of Mr. Zhang’s business tenets.
It is getting tougher to run a buffet restaurant, and Mr. Zhang has no further plans to expand his business. He is dedicated to maintaining this restaurant and keeping the authentic flavors already present on the menu. Ho Ho Grand Buffet has a wide range of marvelous offerings which along with the great service will surely impress even the most jaded foodie.
